WP06 - Connections and Dissipative Systems with Early Warning

Lead contractor:
UBATH - University of Bath
Involved participants:
BAM, BOZZA, GUNI, IPM, ITAM, CINTEC, MONU, UNIPD, NTUA, POLIMI, UBATH, UMINHO, ZRS
ActivityType: RTD Start month: 9 End month: 24 Persons month: 56

Objectives

  • Review strengthening elements able to dissipate seismic energy to be used for connections and definition of technologies for connections, related to catalogues in WP3 and to interventions on vertical and horizontal elements in WP4 & 5;
  • Develop a stick-slip based prototype and a hysteretic dissipation prototype;
  • Develop early warning systems for deformation and accelerations based on instrumenting the strengthening device and its connections to the structure;
  • Development of test set-ups, laboratory procedures, and testing strategies for connections. Specifications for laboratory specimens;
  • To carry out the necessary tests to characterise the seismic behaviour of original and strengthened connections, using quasi-static cyclic procedures and/or shaking table tests, in order to obtain information on the system performance and the main constitutive laws relevant for modelling.

Subtasks

  • WP6.1: Structural connections;
  • WP6.2: Development and testing of stick-slip prototype anchor and of hysteretic dissipation prototype anchor, both instrumented with sensors devices;

Deliverables

  • Development of testing methods and strategies for structural connections before and after interventions (D6.1), delivered at PM12;
  • Dissipative instrumented anchors and calibrated sensor system (D6.2), delivered at PM15;
  • Trial test on connections (D6.3), delivered at PM18;
  • Experimental results on structural connections (D6.4), delivered at PM21;
  • Experimental results on dissipative anchors (D6.5), delivered at PM24.

Aimed at developing various interventions for the different structural connections, in particular dissipative systems with early warning, (beginning with PM9). It is also aimed at intense experimental characterization of both original and strengthened connections. Progresses in this WP will be checked by delivery of the dissipative connections (PM18) and by obtaining the entire set of experimental results on original and improved connections (M4, at PM24).
